Bleed Safe Lane County was founded by a local firefighter and father of two.
When the realization struck that fire and EMS would struggle to reach victims of shootings or other major trauma fast enough. Nathan Kunasek, a local firefighter, decided to take action and create the non-profit Bleed Safe Lane County.
Bleed Safe Lane County is a group of individuals that are motivated to teach our community hemorrhage control. We have already trained over a thousand community members using Stop the Bleed techniques. Techniques such as applying direct pressure to pressure points, packing large wounds with gauze, and tourniquet application. These techniques were created after so many lives were lost in the aftermath of Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, CT, in December 2012. In the following months a local trauma surgeon followed up on the lives lost that dreadful day and deemed that most causes of death were due to severe loss of blood. This knowledge led the surgeon to forming a group that is comprised of experts in the the fields of trauma surgery, emergency medical care, government and law enforcement. Together they formed recommendations that would ultimately improve the rate of survival for anyone suffering from severe blood loss. This became known as the Hartford Consensus.
